One of the most common questions I receive before a session is, "What should we wear?" The good news is that you don't need a completely new wardrobe or perfectly matching outfits to create beautiful photos. The best outfits are the ones that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.

Here are a few tips to help you choose outfits that will photograph beautifully and allow your personalities to shine.

Choose Coordinating Colors, Not Matching Outfits

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, choose a color palette that complements each other. Soft neutrals, earth tones, muted blues, sage greens, creams, and warm browns tend to photograph beautifully in almost any setting.

Think of your outfits as pieces of the same puzzle rather than identical copies.

Prioritize Comfort

If you're constantly adjusting your outfit or wearing something that doesn't feel like you, it will show in your photos. Choose clothing that allows you to move comfortably and confidently.

For couples sessions, I recommend outfits that you can easily walk, sit, hug, and move around in without feeling restricted.

Consider Your Location

The location of your session can help guide your outfit choices.

Downtown sessions pair well with slightly dressier outfits.

Open fields and nature locations photograph beautifully with softer, more relaxed styles.

Beach sessions often look best with light fabrics and neutral colors.

Mountain sessions pair well with layers and earthy tones.

Choosing outfits that fit the environment helps create a cohesive look throughout your gallery.

Avoid Distracting Patterns and Logos

Large logos, neon colors, and busy patterns can pull attention away from what matters most . . . you.

Solid colors, subtle textures, and timeless pieces tend to create photographs that feel classic and won't look dated years from now.

Add Texture and Layers

Texture adds visual interest and depth to your images.

Consider incorporating:

Knit sweaters

Linen fabrics

Denim jackets

Flowy dresses

Layered pieces

Simple accessories

These details add dimension without overwhelming the photo.

Don't Forget the Shoes

Shoes are often overlooked, but they can make a big difference in the overall look of your session. Choose footwear that complements your outfit and is appropriate for the location.

If we're walking through fields, trails, or downtown streets, comfort is key.

When in Doubt, Send Me Photos

I am always happy to help! Feel free to send me screenshots, outfit options, or photos of what you're considering. One of my favorite parts of the planning process is helping my clients feel confident and prepared before their session.

At the end of the day, the most important thing you can wear is confidence. Your session is about capturing genuine connection and authentic moments, not achieving perfection. Choose outfits that feel like you, and together we'll create images you'll love for years to come.
